Hi all,
A friend of mine nearby has a 54 M-37 with a toasted tranny. I gave him an NP-420 synchro tranny out of a Power Wagon, explaining to him to re-use his rear yoke and either his top cover, or at least to pull the PW shifter out and put his M-37 stub into it. He came back to the shop today saying that the holes did not match his bell housing. He had made a template of his bell. I was under the impression that M-37s took NP-420 synchro trannys but his bell matches the PW non synchro pattern. His top cover is the same as the 420, and not the same as the non synchro. The front shaft cover is also larger in diameter on the 420 than the hole in the bell. The non synchro is the same as his bell. Also, his PTO mates up to the 420 (bevel gears) leading me to think there was possibly a military tranny case and a civilian? If so, would a civilian 420 guts fit in the military case?
Cornfused in Vermont!
Tim
