I ordered up a front & rear brake drum from a 69 W200 to see what the differences are from my old 67 drums. I'm sure some fellows here know some great tricks, but I wound up destroying the old drum in the press getting it apart from the hub. The studs appear to have mushroomed a bit at the top, making them real tough to press out. Anyway, in every critical dimension the 69 drums are the same as those on my 67. They also fit perfectly on the hubs. Composition-wise, they are different. The 67's are a composite affair, with a pressed steel center attached with bent tabs to a cast friction surface. The new ones are all cast iron. Part number's show up from both Raybestos and Wagner. Supposedly, there is a difference between the front & rear drums. They come as separate part numbers, and the fronts are priced at $110, the rears $140 (!!!!!!). (Raybestos/Napa shows $86 apiece) When I got them out of the boxes, they looked exactly the same, and in fact, both had the exact same casting numbers on the rims. Sometimes I swear the see us coming.... So a brake job on my 67 W200 is going to run about $700 in parts with a new set of drums. Ouch. A entire decent donor truck with a set of late model, disc brake fronted axles will run about that. Does anyone here see something I'm missing about 69 drums on my 67 axles? Any tips on separating the drums and studs from the hubs?
