Oh, I just re-read your post below, ha!ha! NO a 400 is a big block, that distributor won't work in the 318A. However, before you swap, you should consider using the Mopar Kit (someone said they paid $150 for it I paid $195, it's a tad more now).
Keep in mind, that there is a lot of confusion here in these threads. What is being discussed and confused is really THREE separate systems.
1) the P Kit: it is fine, if you are only wanting to get rid of your points, that's all it does, replaces points with a sensor.
2) Electronic Ignition, economical (apparently I can't use the word cheap! ha!ha!) if found from a donor vehicle or stock parts, consists of the distributor, ECU and ballast resistor.
3) Mopar Electronic Ignition Kit, most expensive (less cheap) and provides the most performance enhancement, as it has a high performance distributor, high output ECU and wiring loom and ballast resistor. It takes about 45 minutes to install, it's all new parts so you don't have to chase down issues with a used distributor or bad resistor.
Just as a last add, the resistor problem has really been over hyped. In the early 70's when the Chrysler electronic system first came out, both the ECU and resistors were prone to failure. New untried technology and quality control in the production processes I'd suspect. Those problems were corrected and haven't been an issue for decades, but the urban legend about them persists, mainly because of people using used electronic parts from junk yards and other sources. And partly because folks keep repeating old stories. In my '72, which was the first year, I had to replace 3 units in the first year, none after that.
The ECU and resistor in the Mopar Performance Kit are bulletproof, I've had no issues with any of the MP systems I've installed in the last 8 years. The distributor is a typical MP distributor and can be tuned for just about any requirement that a truck would encounter. Like I said in my earlier posts, if your looking for an economic solution to eliminate your points, use the P Kit or a stock Mopar electronic system, if you're looking for more performance, with reliability, get the MP Kit.
