Hm, wrong relay/wiring?

Lemme think, the starter relay is getting voltage fed back through from the wire that by-passes the ballast resistor. A 25 cent diode from Radio shack will prevent that. Or eliminate the wire from coil to starter/relay. It'll probably start fine, until something gets weak, like cccccold weather.

Are you using the duplex ballast resistor? The start side ought to go to it's own particular lug on the relay, not to the 'S' on the ign switch. If you were to hook it direct to the big cable at the starter, the starter will act as a short to ground and kill the ignition.
