The resistor. Like manny said the guages were all 6 volt. so a resistor was attached to the ignition side of the guage. 12 volts is too much for the guage. don't put it on 12 v anymore or you can fry it. Most american car companies used 6 volt guages with a resistor in the system up into the seventies!!
