Here is the mystery:

The engine runs for 10 minutes or so, and then quits.

The fuel pump is electric, and is new.

The fuel pump make a very distinctive rattling sound when it loses prime. It makes this noise for about 30-40 seconds before the engine dies.

I took the fuel tank completely out of the truck, and confirmed that there is nothing bad in it, the pickup tube is clear, nothing wrong.

The fuel lines between the tank and the engine are steel, I blew them out, and they seem very clear.

The lines to and from the pump are rubber, new, with hose clamps. There is an inline fuel filter, and it is new.

Carb has been gone through very recently, and is clean inside. Float/needle works correctly, fills the bowl then stops.

The car can sit for awile, I can reprime the pump, and it will do it all over again.

I can run a line from a gasoline can to the pump intake, and the engine will run all day - that's how I limped back from the dump.

This is something dumb, but I can't seem to find it. I must find this problem and kill it... it interfered with a perfectly good dump run.

I am now searching for possible air leaks in the line between the tank and engine.

Ideas?

H
