If the red goes all the way to the battery

The red wire in the 'senser' wire. It will set the voltage to whatever you hook it to. I.E., hook to the battery, get 13.8-14.2 at the battery, making up for any losses in the system. Hook it to the alt output, it will make the regulated voltage at the alt, and you will lose volts due to resistance in the wiring, and not get all you should to the battery. "My alt works good, but my battery doesn't get charged up"?

If your battery is under the hood, how far is it "all the way to the battery"? The starter end of the battery cable will suffice, that is the way everydmanthing is from the factories.
