It is my understanding that the total energy cycle for ethanol is negative relative to gasoline, but it is positive for biodiesel. That means that biodiesel is an improvement and reduces dependance on fossil fuels (even though it does require some energy in the process). But, I am definately not an expert! Don, can answer much more accurately!
Of course, if we were using nuclear power then we could more easily make alternative fuels more easily - the only thing the french have done right.
