My reference says Fort Gates was abandoned in March 1852. The interesting thing about history is that after all the years, the historians haven't agreed on what happened.

There was an area east of the Fort Gates site that was the original site of Camp Hood established in September 1942, but when the "new" Camp Hood was established, it was on the south side of what is now Fort Hood and the "old" site has been known as North Fort Hood for many years.

Because I was involved in mobilization planning, I learned that land used for training at Fort Hood had a variety of owners - State of Texas, US Army, some leased, and some owned by other state and federal agencies. It has been some years, but the last time I was involved, North Fort Hood was owned by the State of Texas and was the primary training area for the 49th Division - Texas ARNG.

Waiting for more on the 1/4 ton trucks...
