'72-'80 Power Wagons

Has anyone taken the wear slack out of the automatic transmission linkage in these trucks? I have a '79 PW and a Ram Charger, and at the best adjustment , they both require a "thump" on the shift lever to go into drive and reverse. I would think the bearing points at each end of the support rod have been elongated?
