In my opinion (WARNING, means next to nothing), buy inexpensive tires. I bought XZL's because I thought they looked cool and because they were about the same price as the XL's I had seen sell.
I say "buy inexpensive tires" because personally, I will indisputably be very hard on my tires. Not that I will abuse them, but they will see many miles of rocky off road hours. When the tires are worn out, I will most likely scrounge around for some Military Surplus tires. Yes yes, they may be 5 years old, but I don't plan on keeping them long enough to have to deal with safety issues. If you plan on such things as 4.89s, Diesel/V8 conversion, OD trans and shiney paint (no offense), they by all means buy new quality tires because your particular rig may see many highway miles where a new and safe tire is mandatory.
A tire blowout on the trail is a bummer, a blow out on the highway is a tragedy.
