The wood itself isn't that expensive compared to the time it takes to put it in. Poplar won't last one wet winter. Pine (of any species) might get you 5 years if you're lucky, yellow pine being the most rot-resistant. Slather the whole thing with wood poison and it'll last a couple more years. Redwood and cedar heartwood are rot resistant but way too soft. Some tropical woods are strong and rot resistant, but no better than white oak and much more expensive. White oak really is superior in terms of strength and rot resistance for the money. Never use red oak on anything exposed to water.

If you can't afford good wood now, I'd say just throw a sheet of used exterior plywood or concrete form board in the bed so you can haul stuff until you can afford some good wood.
