You might consider what a friend of mine who lived in North Dakota years ago told me was common practice. They had a heavy line connected between the house and the barn so they could follow it in a blizzard and get back. I wish we were getting here in Idaho any thing even close to what you are getting there. It's nearly 40° and drizzling rain here.
