My Dad has been telling me that for 40 years. As a matter of fact you can't even let it touch the concrete, let alone have it sit on concrete.
I know that there is no reason for doing it but as long as he is around I will always be using a piece of wood out of respect for him.
I have seen batteries ruined when someone sits a battery on the ground and it picks up a stone on the bottom. The battery is installed with the stone stuck to the bottom and it eventually pokes a hole thru the case.
