Paul, I think they are a fiber reinforced plastic (FRP), at least that's what some composites are made of. I thought that's what Marty's bed was done with in the photo. I think it would work well. If you really hit it hard, it's not as likely to splinter or split, but as far as hardness and how easy it is to dent compared to wood, I'm not sure. Roger
