a diner as defined by a long islander is an eating establishment that is required to meet the 5 following standards. if any of the 5 criteria are not met you are eating at a coffee shop.

the 5 rules to be considerd a diner are
1. must owned by greek family
2. must serve at least 22hrs a day
3. will make you anything you want- on or off the menu
4. must serve liquor
5. must be a freestanding building that has parking all around the perimeter.

bonus points given for table jukeboxes and mint bowls at the register.

i spent most of my formative days at a real diner discussing the above. the ny metro area seems to be the sweetspot for real diners per square mile. my adventures into the rest of the country have proven that i am fortunate to be in the epicenter of one of the greatest forms of eateries ever invented!

you might be calling your coffee shop a diner but its like calling any cola a coke. we understand what you mean but its not really correct.
