i like inlines, just not the jeep ones. you have your preference as evidenced by your posts and im sure you are not wrong for you. my preference for a inline swap would be to do an inline diesel and not an inline gasser. im sure there are great inline six gas engines but they eventually gave way to v8s in the larger trucks. my ideal transplant for gas would be a 345 international with a stick and a married 205. since theyre old and a bit dated, they enter the poly dodge realm - nice to own, but harder and more costly to do. if i was going through the hassel to change, i would do a 4bta as i did the 360 thing already. my m37 360 was perfect for my uses as a tool around vehicle. it had 489s, power steering and disc brakes. plenty of power and was responsive. started every time and was easy to get parts for. if you are a serious crawler, mudder, or rock climber youd have a different ideal transplant.
