The 4.0 is ALL Mopar. The V-6 just doesn't have enough torque for this application. MoparTina has one in her Liberty, and it's a fine street motor, but not up to I-6 par for off road torque. In addition it's going to be a tighter fit than the in-line.
I don't know why you don't like in-lines, they are high torque and the smoothest running engines ever designed.
