Chris,
It's a nearly identical block. Same physical size, different enough that 4.2 exhaust won't interchange with the 4.0 and the bell pattern is slightly different, but they can share internals. Looking at a 4.0 vs. the 4.2, one would be hard pressed to tell them apart. The difference is in the internals, 4.0 has a bigger bore and shorter stroke, by installing a 4.2 crank in a 4.0 you can make a 290 hp. 4.6 or bigger depending upon how much machining you want to do. My 4.2 is getting a milling to a 9.5:1 compression rating, new cam and Mopar Fuel injection. I've promoted these motors before (there are millions of them in salvage yards) but I've seen little interest until this thread.
4.2 and 4.0's can be found from 1981 on, in CJ7, CJ8, CJ10, XJ Cherokee, FSJ Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Gladiator, MJ Commanches, and all Wranglers up to 2006. With several hundred thousand of each model sold, there are bunches out there and very affordable.
If you can't or don't want to tackle the 4bt conversion, this isn't a bad way to go, as long as you use the fuel injected version.
