I seem to recall taking a thin 1/4" rod rounded at the tip and driving it between the edges of the old tube to collapse it inward on all three sides, while also breaking it away from the casting. I then grabed the edge with a pair of vise grips and twisted/pulled it out. Maybe I got lucky. Of course it's now been almost 15 years since I did it too. Good luck.
