In Reply to: How does a bad fuel pump allow fuel to leak into the crankcase??? posted by Confused Engineer on April 06, 2000 at 22:34:56:

Unless I'm mistaken, the two stage fuel pump
(vacuum and fuel)on the dodges has a through shaft
running through a seal. When the seal wears out
or gets hard, the diaphragm squeezes gas through
the seal around the shaft into the crankcase.
I had it happen to an M-37 I had. I also had a
friend blow the pan clean off his truck when a
backfire somehow lit off a gas-oil mix like this.
Apparently it blew around the compression rings
into the fuel/oil/air mix and KABLOOIE! Talk about
quick oil changes!!
