You should have some friction resistance but it should come from the centre shaft rubbing on a rubber washer.
I would suggest that you take very careful measurements of the dimensions of the filter element and find a patient NAPA guy who will look for or let you look in his book. They have dimensions listed for various elements.... same lenght but slightly smaller diameter.
That how I found my exact element number for a senior oil filter element... a Fram C-31P.

By the way, there is an excellent equivalent oil filter chart element numbers just published in the Military Vehicles Magasine.....
...it would be nice to get the authors permission to reproduce in the Tech section at the beginning of the Forum.
