The original Fluid Drive Fluid was an ISO 32 (10W)fluid with a anti wear additive and a new invention an anti FOAM additive which was needed to break up the foam which is developed by the vanes in a torque converter (Fluid Drive Coupling). Foam contains air bubbles and power cannot be transmitted through a fluid which contains air because air is compressible. The best example is air in a brake line and the spongy pedal that results. This was a major break through as the anti foam is a silicone compound that has to be sheared into the base oil by a process called dispensation.

As for Automatic transmission fluid being the replacement, yes it is an ISO 32 fluid but DEXRON ATF contains a seal swell additive which is great for modern seals but swells old seals too much and then they will fail. If you want to use an ATF the Ford type F is the preferred replacement as it does not contain the seal swell additive.

I took this question to a major oil additive company, Lubrizol Corporation, and they stated that the BEST replacement is a Universal Tractor fluid #134. This is an ISO 32 fluid with all the properties of an automatic transmission fluid for wear, heat dissipation, and anti foam with the added shear strength for moving bevel cut gears under high loads which is exactly what is found in the old fluid drive trannies.

I will also add the fluid drive coupling is not fed from the trannie, but is filled separately.

The addition of a fluid drive coupling, linked with a standard clutch, is not limited to Chrysler cars as many industrial application used it along with some large trucks, and I have seen a few Power Wagons with them also linked to a standard transmission because the fluid drive unit does provide a torque multiplication factor

As a side note most modern manual transmissions use the #134 fluid, not a gear lube, as its factory fill.

Hope this helps.
