Your engine should be tuned such that you are running all the advance you can under load, and more when under light throttle. Under light throttle, an engine has less mixture in the chamber, so is less prone to ping, and therefor you can use more advance to wring the last bit of energy available out of the fuel. So, saying that vac units retard is, umm retarded?:) What they do is Advance under light throttle, giving better performance, better gas milage, less pollution, and just plain run better. The only time they are of no benefit is in uses that never use partial throttle- like racing, or boats- boats never go down hill, or fixed load, like compressor or generator use. Think of them like the centifugal advance, not in terms of advance/retard, but as automatic timing optimizers.

The fact that vac advance distributors are available for 230's at all ought to tell you something... like good thing for some uses? Are your uses more like the cars they came on, or more like an air compressor?

Downside? One more thing to waterproof, so the GI stuff didn't have them. They get in the way of changing starters?
