One thing that I found that helped me to bleed brakes is to adjust all shoes out tight against the drums. Then bleed each wheel starting with the one furtherest from the master cylinder.
By adjusting the brakes tight you get rid of the shoe movement so that the full stroke of your pedal is used in pushing fluid and getting rid of the air.
