They sell used 40' shipping containers (Conex boxes) near the ports for around $1000 or so each, the last time I checked. Not sure if that included any delivery or not. There's an outfit near Tacoma that sells lots of them. They tend to accumulate on this side of the ocean because a lot more stuff goes eastbound than westbound. The ones they sell are usually somewhat beat up, but still useable for storage, etc. I see a lot of them used for storage in rural areas. They will rust out so you need to keep them painted or put some kind of better roof on them and get them off the ground if you want them to last a long time, at least in a rainy climate.

I think transportation would be the killer unless you're within a couple hundred miles of a big port. Nobody hauls anything for less than $2/mile any more, and each container would be a full load. I thought about it, but can't use them for my place because the road's way too crooked to get a big rig down into it.

Another thing to look into is insulated containers. Some of them are made to have refrigeration units on them, and they're covered with insulation. Since you'd absolutely need to insulate your shop anyway, if you can get an already-insulated container you're one step ahead. One guy I knew had 5 or 6 of the insulated ones buried on his place with passages between them. It was going to be his Y2K survival retreat. I haven't seen him since prior to Y2K, but I assume he survived.
