I'm curious about that too. I just had the flywheel of my M35 and was surprised that the manual referred to the bolts as special "self-locking bolts". They were short fine-thread grade 8 cap screws, but I couldn't see any self-locking feature. They did not use lock-washers, though, and given the trouble that could result from the bolts coming out, I think I'd be wary of using anything but the OEM style. They also specified a pretty stiff torque on them, 125 ft-lbs, which is enough that I'd be afraid of snapping off weaker bolts.
