It's a long story. Model railraoders use granite in the 0.10" size to represent railroad track ballast.
One company sells it for $5 per cup.
I contacted a shingle company in PA who directed me to a granite operation near Boston, who said, basically, "Come get all you want, free."
But I lost the contact info.
