Chris & Melissa Becker in our families 1917 Hupmobile "Whooper"

Hey guys,

Chris what you have there is an explosion whistle. They were sold as accessories in the early teens and twenties for as little as a couple of dollars. Most are a single whistle that mounts into the priming cup above the exhaust valve. When you pull the lever the exhaust gases are diverted to the whistle and it whoops every time the valve opens up.
It probably won't work on the head of our flathead dodges as you'll need to mount it in the spark plug hole and mount the spark plug next to it. They had fittings for Model T Fords as they are flathead four bangers. I have seen it done this way but the problem is you don't get very good spark to that cylinder and the engine misses.
Our 1917 Hupmobile has one mounted over #3 exhaust valve. On the Hupmobile there is no head, it is what is called a monoblock as the the valves and piston are cast in the block. The crankcase is seperate and there is no removeable head. When the pistons are removed thay are pulled through the bottom of the crankcase around the crank shaft. To gain access to the intake and exhaust valves there are 2 big allen caps screws per cylinder that are unscrewed and you remove the valves through the top of the block. The Explosion whistle on our car is installed on #3 exhaust valve cap as the intake has a priming cup for priming the engine with some fuel on cold mornings.
Incidentily our '17 Hupmobile is named "Whooper" because when we open up with the explosion whistle you get loud WHOOP,WHOOP, WHOOP!
Chris if you don't sell it E-mail me as I would be Interested in it for 1917 Model T speedster.

Cheers,

Chris & Carston Becker
