I bought a 1954 from Oregon. When I went to register it (no title for that old a vehicle in NY) I wanted to use the VIN, not the engine number, as had been used in Oregon.
The NYS DMV advised me to take a rubbing of the VIN plate, and a photo, and bring them in to the DMV and they would accept that as evidence. The gal at the counter nearly soiled herself when I brought the actual plate in, (as it is, as you know, held on with screws). She said "You know, you can get arrested for doing this?" I said, yes, but the rubbing didn't work, and I don't own a camera, and the truck is too big to fit through the doors.
Case closed. Truck is now registered the "right" way.
