Yup, you need a Shop Manual and a Parts Manual. If your using a Dodge or GM Flywheel Housing adapter, Yes, the starters interchange. I am not sure about water pumps, however they do look the same ???

You must get the 'RIGHT' Shop Manual, one that covers the older non computer engines. The Number for the Shop Manual is Bulletin 3666087-01, "Trouble Shooting and Repair Manual B3.9 and B5.9 Series Engines". The number for the Parts Manual for the 4BT3.9 is Bulletin 3884252-01

I believe the shop manual is now about $65, dont know about the parts manual.
