Check your yoke shear pin dia. at the winch end. If it's 1/4 dia., it’s rated at 8,000 pounds, 5/16ths dia., it’s rated at 10,000. The winch will probably pull 30-50% more as a safety design built in by engineers who know human nature is to stretch things to the limit. At least that is how it was done at the time these winches were made. You’re lucky to a few ponds beyond what is rated for a winch now days.

Now this means a winch can pull thousands of pounds of rolling weight, but it’s the dead weight that is important. To drag a 5,000 pound solid block (no wheels/sled), it takes 10,000 pounds of pulling force. You could have pulled a string of 10 dead Fords behind you very easy with your winch because it rolling weight with some resistance of snow/mud – as long as you had a good anchor to tether the chain/cable to.

If you’re old enough, you might recall the Dodge Truck commercials in the 70’s tethered to 18-20 logging trailers topped with logs and pulling them. It made a very impressive commercial, but was easy to do.
