It is a pretty common problem on these engines. As is vapor lock in the summer.
The heat valve cures this iceing problem,but you say your engine don't have it. I not 100% sure but I thought my old "W" shop manuals showed a heat butter fly valve on all engines? I will have to look next time I'm able to "Limp" out to the garage.
In the mean time have you set the idle rpm up? I would turn the idle up as much as I could stand,and it should help.
I think by opening the throttle plate up as much as you can will help flow more unrestricted air?
