I think the modern aftermarket winches are rated in Chinese pounds. If it's an 8000 lb winch, it's guaranteed to break at 8001 lbs. Of course they always call them "heavy duty" these days. The Garwood winch on my M35 says "light duty" on the nameplate. It's rated at 10,000 lbs, uses 1/2" cable and takes two men to lift it. I suspect you could hang the whole truck over a cliff with that winch, and if the engine would run, it would pull itself up.
