Back to the piston size vs. pressure. A larger master piston WILL move more fluid, but will result in a softer pedal. He already has a spongy/soft feel, so either there is still air in the lines or his front brake lines or master piston are too large in diameter. Notice that disc. brake lines are generally smaller to exert more pressure on the pistons. Installing braided stainless lines solves this problem.
Front brakes stop you; rear brakes give you the "pedal feel". Try ajusting the rear brake shoes to the proper specs, re-bleed and see what that "feels" like.
