They are about the only thing that works with a low clearance front wheel drive car. I bought mine used at a yard sale and the chains have outlived the plastic box and one of the cheesy nylon connectors that hold the chains together. I just but the one with the bad connector on the outside and always carry baling wire. A small cheap plastic tarp is good to lay on while putting them on. And tightners, you need them. About the only use chains get around here is having them to get over Donner Pass between Reno and California. There they have a check point that they make you put chains on. No chains, no go. I still think the chain Nazis(the cops) and the Chain Monkeys (Installers) are in cahoots. Also, did you ever notice the friends that are with you never know how to put on chains? Usually in the winter he in Idaho on the highways I just put the studded tires on, but Cali wants chains... I've seen cable chains on semis, but don't know how they last.
