I've been there a couple of times and it really is an amazing old growth forest to have in the middle of a big city. Trees blow down in forests, so it's part of the natural scheme of things, but in a city park it's still sad. I hope they'll at least salvage the wood and let boat-builders and cabinet makers and luthiers and other craftsmen buy it and put it to good use. It's not very often you get a chance at big old-growth fir these days. I understand the cycles of nature, but at $5,000-$10,000 per thousand, clear fir makes pretty expensive mushroom compost. They can leave the smaller trees and the half-rotten trees for nutrients, but the good ones deserve to be made into good lumber.
