I could think of times I could have used one in my Tender on some realy steep hills. One thing I find is that grades change so fast you better be in the right gear hitting them and it isn't at 60 MPH either! Not sure it would help me in predicting the gear needed in 50 ft that you better not be in to pull it. After you make several runs getting water to the 8,000 ft level on Logging Roads you remember what gear worked the best. Heck even after 4,000 miles on these roads it could be a real pain shifting all the time! Most driving was done in 2nd and 3rd but 1st Low Range and 4th came into use a lot out of 13 gears you could use. You did not use High Range very often so spliting gears was not a option. Getting the RPMs up enought to have time to shift with out blowing your drive shaft took some getting used to on the steepest hills. If you did not get into the next higher gear it was a long 5 mile climb waiting for the next chance to do it. Mark H.
