That's an interesting technique. I don't think I'd want to run a stove red-hot, but on something big like that, I'd probably build a wood fire outside and heat it in that until it was red hot, then weld it up, pile more wood over top of it, and let it cool with the coals and ashes.

I've heard that on really big castings, like the main body/transmission/differential/final drive housing of a cat, there are shops that will heat the whole thing red hot in a huge furnace and then a welder in one of those reflective foundry suits will weld it up while it's glowing hot, and then they'll put it back in the furnace to cool. That has to be expensive but so is scrapping a $10,000+ casting.
