I have done the sand thing with insulation on top. I can't remember what it was, but something cast iron that I welded. I have a friend who bought a Allis-Chalmers D-17 tractor that was broken in half. There is an adapter ring between the trans. and engine. This was cracked clean through. He took it off and put it on top of an old coal/wood furnace with the big donut air to air heat exchanger on the top. He filled the furnace with old tires and heated it until the furnace and adapter were both glowing red. He welded it up, put it back on the furnace, stoked the whole thing up again with tires, closed up the old shed the furnace was in, and waited several days until the whole thing cooled. It is still on that tractor. It has a loader on it, and gets used harder than most loader tractors. Not environmentally friendly, but it worked.
