It's pretty common for a pre 24 valve Cummins to smoke under acceleration. The only way to cure it is if you de-tune the truck like it comes from the factory. Keep in mind that a 1989 Cummins engine is almost identical to a 2006 with the exception of the extra 12 valves & fuel delivery. If you increase the fuel to the engines potential, the turbo can't spool quick enough to force the fuel into the engine off the line.
They solved this in the newer trucks with computers. Ford solved it with a fancy computerized variable pitch turbo but in the pre 24V mechanical diesels there is no cure.
A twin turbo helps a lot but obviously is cost prohibitive.
A nicely tuned 12V Cummins will not blow any black smoke under full power once the turbo builds full boost & I might add that a nicely tuned 12V has way more HP & torque than a stock 2003 or newer Cummins.
When's the last time you saw a big rig accelerating where it didn't blow black smoke until the turbo wound up?
I say turn your pump up Aurthur! LOL!
