Warn made some automatic locking hubs for a few years. Any time the front drivetrain is pulling, the hubs will lock, but the auto function doesn't in reverse. We threw a set on our 59 and they work pretty well in just the right situation. The nice part is that they have a knob and whenever you want to want full lockup, you just give it a crank.
All I have heard is bad things about teh autohubs common on nissan, toyota, ford, chevy and isuzu. They work ok - but when they give up there is no warning and they will leave you stranded...
