Yes, you are correct. Its done all the time in racing engines. Beside reduced pan depth, you can also have a huge capacity oil tank for cooler oil and more of it. In a Cummins, the oil pump is mounted in the face of the block. The oil pickup is cast into the block and terminates at a machined flange in the front right corner. In a typical application (normal oil pan) there is a 1.0" steel tube that runs (bolts with gasket 10mm bolts) from that flange to the bottom of the pan. At that point you have a oil strainer screen and a second support that runs from the end of the pickup up to the block and is retained with a 10 mm bolt. This support is to eliminate cracking due to any vibration.
