If you look at the site Paul in NY was talking about, joints with repeated shear will kill a grade 8 before a grade 5 will fail, (grade 8 being stronger, but more brittle) but most importantly is the type (shank length size) of bolt, if the bolt is improperly sized and threads are in the connection, it will have nearly 40% less strength than a bolt with the shank in the connecting parts.
