My 47 Willys "wagon" has a 239 Studebaker V8 that some previous owner installed. It required a spring over conversion on the axles to clear the oil pan, and a bit of "adjusting" on the firewall for the distributor. It was a neighbour's Coyote hunting truck when I got it, so the original axles can take some abuse.

Does your truck have the Dana or the Timken rear axle?

I think a good starting point would be a complete 1984/85 Toyota 4X4 truck chassis. Their drivetrains are very up to the task, and similar in design. (leaf springs and solid axles). The size should be real close in width and length. There are lots of them out there for cheap with the bodies rusted to nothing. There is a very strong aftermarket for suspension and driveline pieces, and there may even be a supplier out there that makes an engine or transmission adapter for you.

Or, just put the body on a Toyota Landcruiser diesel chassis.

Another interesting chassis would be one of the late model Jeep Grand Cherokee's with the automatic lockers.
