I grew up in Seattle, and they actually used to be able to deal with it better than they do now. In 68 it snowed 2 feet in 2 days and Boeing closed for the first time ever. If the school busses didn't run, school opened an hour late and the kids walked to school. Now if it snows 2" it's a disaster. It hasn't snowed a foot for probably 30 years. Most winters it doesn't snow at all. Now they actually announce school closures on the news BEFORE it even starts to snow! Half an inch in Lynnwood means the evening news shows all send their news girl out to report "live from the scene where the first flakes are beginning to fall", making sure that everybody can see there are snowflakes in her hair (When there's a wind storm predicted, they send her out to Alki point to get her hair mussed up by the wind). Then everybody rushes to the stores to stock up on survival supplies as urgently as if the news girl had just reported that a dozen Russian ICBMs were incoming. It's really quite a phenomenon, so long as your not stuck on the road with people who think that A) because they're truck is big, it can't slip, or B) because they have 4WD, they can drive as if the road was bare, or C) you should always go up a snowy hill as slowly as possible and stop half way up to look around and have another sip of coffee before proceeding, or D) the barest trace of snow visible on or from the road means certain death, so you should creep along at 0.1 mph clenching the steering wheel in a death grip, or E) because they have an SUV they should use the C and D people as a slalom course since the salesman told them their new volvo/audi/subaru would be good on snow. One thing for sure, it's an early chrismas present for the body shops and wreckers.
