I've used the ATF in older transmissions but why take a chance in one that is relatively expensive to replace? A small parts kit for less than $40 or a rebuild kit for less than $200 are available on ebay daily. Why have to yank it out a second time because of the harmonic noise its making. I would take it apart and clean every piece of it, then re-assemble with the proper kit. It doesn't cost much compared to the cost of the whole diesel swap.
