A Little Story of Precision Measurement

As you know, I did serious modifications on the Windshield on my M37. It was converted to one piece glass, hinges removed and then welded on the cowl. The top of the windshield has drilled and tapped holes that match holes in the Arctic Cap for anchoring the cap on the front.
There is NO adjustment !, the tapped holes must match the Arctic cap holes or you have a nightmare.

I got ahead of my self on the windshield, made all the modifications, cut the hinges off and welded closed the hinge holes in the body. Then I remembered, I forgot to measure the 'exact' location of the windshield on the cowl with the hinges in place. Now I had no way to know 'exactly' where to place the windshield to weld her down to the cowl. This was a huge concern/problem, I screwed up bad.

I emailed a friend who has a M37 and explained my need for 'precision' measurements so I could locate the windshield, stressing that the tapped holes in the windshield frame must line up with the holes in the Arctic Cap, there is no margin for error. I received the measurements and located the windshield and welder her in place. The body was then painted and much later, I found and bought the Arctic cap. After it was painted, I had 3 friends come up to help me lift her on. It went right on and looked perfect, but I had not yet looked at the holes. My friends left, I got out the flashlight and mirror to look up on the top of the windshield frame for the hole alignment. The left side was perfect dead center, I went to the right side, perfect dead center. All tapped holes had been chased prior to lifting the top on with seam sealer in place, each and every bolt ran right down with my fingers.......It was perfect !!!!!

My sincere thanks to Tom Petroff for 'absolute precision measurements' so I could locate the windshield !!

If someone ever asks you for a measurement, be exact, measure it many times, you don't know what is riding on this measurement at the other end. And if your not up to that precision measurement let the person know so they can ask someone else
