PTO question

I picked up a bi-direction PTO ( early type I believe) for my '47 WDX awhile ago.

I am in the beginning stage of installation, and have a couple of questions and are looking for install tips. ( trans. is in truck )

Are the PTO's 3 position? it seems that way, or am I over extending the engagement rail.

Should I use a gasket or just silicone.
