Maybe the laws have changed or are different in your states, but a CDL is a COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE, which means that if your not haulin for pay, ya don't need one. The way it was when I first got mine (I had a truck license for many years before CDL's), was that you could even drive a big rig without one IF, say ya worked for the XYZ Corp, and ya took a load of their product from point A to point B, and the load wasn't generating any capital.

And you could also drive a rig for personal use, as long as ya weren't earning any money either. Now here in Illinoisssssss, we have different classifications. I can drive any vehicle that weighs up to 16,000 lbs. BTW, I no longer have my CDL.
